Urgent response made a difference
In October 2025, Security Guard Tyler Janes was conducting an exterior patrol of a crisis shelter with his partner, Security Guard Akashdeep Singh, when they observed a known patron of the shelter across the street, lying in an unusual and concerning position.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Janes immediately called out to the man, but received no response. Without hesitation, the two guards crossed the street to assess the situation and determined that the man was VSA (vital signs absent). Janes administered Narcan right away, while Singh contacted 911 and relayed vital information to the emergency dispatchers.
The pair then began performing CPR, alternating compressions while providing continuous updates to 911 communications. Their calm under pressure, teamwork and decisive action sustained the man until EMS arrived a few minutes later and successfully regained a pulse. The man was revived and transported to hospital for further care.
Although the incident occurred off-property, and across the street from where they were ‘supposed’ to be patrolling, both guards acted without hesitation or concern for boundaries – driven purely by compassion, duty and humanity. Their courage and professionalism directly resulted in a life being saved that day.
Thank you, Security Guards Janes and Singh!
