Personal attention on two occasions saved lives
We want to recognize two occasions on which Officer Troye Ritchie has saved lives in the Kelowna community.
In the city of Kelowna, the number of suicidal individuals that security professionals come into contact with on a regular basis is, unfortunately, quite high. Thankfully, for Commissionaires BC, these incidents have had a good outcome due to the caring and compassion of our team – especially Security Officer Troye Ritchie.
In March 2024, Officer Ritchie and his team were informed of a male subject who was sleeping in the Library Parkade, on the top floor at the edge of the roof. When Officer Ritchie arrived with his team, he took the lead in pulling the individual from the ledge, and then proceeded to verbally engage the man, facilitating a call to his father and keeping him calm when the man said that he was feeling suicidal. Ultimately the RCMP was called and the Mental Health PAC Team arrived to take over.
In April 2024, while patrolling, Officer Ritchie encountered two individuals at the top of the Memorial Arena West stairwell. The female was visibly upset and her companion discreetly informed Officer Ritchie that she was talking about jumping off the stairwell. Officer Ritchie was able to engage the woman, while informing the Kelowna Security Operations Centre of the situation. When the woman attempted to jump, Officer Ritchie was able to grab her, restraining her until police arrived, and remaining calm and professional even as she attempted to bite him. The woman was taken to hospital by the RCMP, safe as a result of Officer Ritchie’s actions.
Thanks to Officer Ritchie, two individuals were safely restrained so they could receive the care they needed, making a real difference in the community.
Thank you!
