Immediate response to an automobile accident saved a life
In February 2024, Commissionaire Roger Hetherington was driving to work for a regular shift, when he witnessed two vehicles speeding down the street towards a roundabout. As both vehicles approached the roundabout, one slowed its speed, while the other continued at a high rate of speed. That vehicle hit the roundabout and flipped into the air before coming to a stop, upside down.
Commissionaire Hetherington immediately stopped and grabbed a fire extinguisher and first aid kit from his own vehicle and ran to where the driver was still strapped inside the overturned vehicle. The vehicle as starting to smoke, so Hetherington used his extinguisher to put out the small fire. He then extracted the driver by cutting his seatbelt.
Hetherington then dressed the victim’s wounds, including a large 6″ laceration on his head. Meanwhile, other drivers stopped and together they directed traffic and called emergency services. EMT arrived fairly soon after and the victim was handed over to them, and the scene was taken over by the RCMP.
The RCMP officer confirmed that Commissionaire Hetherington’s actions at the scene made a lifesaving difference to the victim and possibly to other drivers.
Thank you, Commissionaire Hetherington!
