Community safety patrol saved a life
In November 2023, Newton BIA Community Safety Patrol (CSP) Officers Hematullah Orya and Michael Keller received a phone call about an unhoused male in medical distress in Surrey.
They arrived on scene within about two minutes, and discovered a person in medical distress laying down on the ground. The man had a crack pipe in his hands and had vomited. The officers attempted to wake the man, but he was unconscious and his breathing patterns were slow.
They ensured the man was in the recovery position and kept an eye on him to make sure that his breathing wasn’t blocked. In the meantime, CSP Keller dialed 911 while CSP Orya administered two doses of Naloxone.
After three minutes, CSP Orya administered a second dose of Naloxone, according to dispatcher’s instructions. The man gained consciousness when BC EHS arived on-scene. The EHS checked the man but he refused to go to hospital. However, he was able to pack his own belongings and leave the area.
Thank you, CSPs Orya and Keller!
