Teamwork, care and compassion in a difficult situation
While Security Officer Ghebrewoldi was on exterior patrol, he discovered a member of the vulnerable sector who appeared to be in need of medical attention. Approaching the individual, Officer Ghebrewoldi realized the individual was unresponsive and laboured in their breathing.
Officer Ghebrewoldi immediately called for backup, and Officer Musayyab Ahmed swiftly arrived on-scene, bringing the medical crash bag.
They suspected that the unresponsive individual was suffering from an opioid overdose. They radioed their command centre to request EMS, administered a dose of Narcan and placed the individual in the recovery position. When the person did not become responsive, they shifted position and administered a second dose of Narcan.
Shortly after this, EMS arrived on-scene and, simultaneously, the affected individual began to regain consciousness. The EMS professionals were impressed with the Officers’ work and remarked, “It seems like you did our job before we even got here!”
Even though the affected individual became irate once their faculties were regained, the security staff retained their compassionate care and professionalism. EMS left the scene, and the individual was also able to leave the scene under their own power.
Thank you for your teamwork and calm effectiveness under pressure, Officers Ghebrewoldi and Ahmed!
