Staying calm in an unexpected medical emergency
During his evening shift, Emergency Dispatcher Andy Brenton received a call from a man who was riding the bus to Albian Village in Alberta and was experiencing a medical emergency.
Brenton stayed calm and professional while on the phone with the man, until the bus reached the site and the man could be assessed by the ERT team.
Although it’s the Emergency Dispatcher’s responsibility to stay on the line, Brenton went above and beyond in this case, continuing to talk to the man and keeping him calm until help could be had. The emergency could have been very bad, and ultimately the man was transported to Edmonton to receive heart surgery.
The man contacted Dispatch afterward to thank Brenton for his help and compassion – and we thank him, too!
