Maintaining composure throughout a difficult situation
While on duty, Senior Security Guard Marc Ducas and Security Supervisor Joe Staverman were alerted by a patron of the facility that a friend needed Naloxone to reverse a potential overdose. They found the man sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, unresponsive and with his face ashen in colour.
The team responded immediately with first-aid kits, Naloxone and an oxygen tank. Security Guard Ducas immediately took control of the situation, performing all necessary assessments while Supervisor Staverman provided the Naloxone to the friend, who administered it to the individual. 911 was called.
After the first dose of Naloxone, the man remained unconscious and Security Guard Ducas determined that he should be removed from the car for better care. He then administered oxygen via an OPA and bag-valve mask, while monitoring vitals, including the man’s weak pulse, from the finger monitor.
The team continued with the bag-valve mask and assessment, and the man’s pulse and oxygen levels quickly improved, but he still was not breathing on his own. After approximately 10 minutes, emergency services arrived on scene and were able to facilitate the man to breathe on his own.
Thank you, Security Guard Ducas!
