Sophisticated first aid assistance
In January 2025, Security Officer Peter Murphy and Shift Supervisor Devin Fast were on duty at an educational facility when they received a report of an unconscious female student.
Murphy and Fast proceeded to the scene, gathering critical information from other students and the 911 operator. Upon examining the woman, they discovered that her breathing was irregular.
Determining that CPR was necessary, Murphy and Fast, with assistance from students, moved the woman to a suitable area for resuscitation. Murphy directed a student to hold C-spine stabilization while, following the directions of the 911 operator, they cut and removed the woman’s shirt. Murphy then began to perform CPR, while Fast coordinated further efforts, including directing first responders to the site.
Working effectively as a team, they performed essential first aid, managed bystanders, and ensured smooth coordination with the Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR). Approximately 14 minutes after the original call, KFR arrived on-scene and took over, with EMS transporting the woman to hospital shortly thereafter.
Professionalism, quick thinking, teamwork and training were all instrumental in ensuring this student was supported during a life-threatening emergency. Thank you!
