Teamwork in healthcare security

In March 2025, security guards at Belleville General Hospital received a call from nursing staff requesting assistance.

Upon arrival on scene, nursing staff informed the security team that a patient was in possession of a knife of approximately 3-4 inches in length. Taking immediate action, Security Guards Akshay Rayat and Pushpender Sandhu positioned themselves in the hallway in front of the patient, to provide a barrier between the patient, staff members and patrons. Security Guard Flindall assisted in removing nursing staff and other patients from the area to ensure their safety.

Nursing staff contacted 911 to request assistance, while Security Guard Flindall radioed Security Supervisor Yuvraj Singh to attend the scene. Flindall then observed that Rayat and Sandhu had taken control of the patient and ensured he was on the ground. Flindall secured the patient’s arms and, with the assistance of the nursing staff, they were able to secure and remove the knife. Supervisor Singh assisted the security staff and helped maintain control of the patient until the police arrived on scene.

Shortly afterwards, Sandhu informed Flindall that Rayat had sustained an injury. Upon assesment, it was determined that Rayat had sustained a 3-inch laceration to their right thigh from the knife. Rayat was treated and made a full recovery.

The heroic efforts of the security staff and supervisor prevented a potential catastrophic outcome for the healthcare staff, patrons and visitors to the hospital. Thank you for your bravery and commitment!
