Saved a life after an explosion

In January 2025, Security Guard Cheryl Bowser was on duty at a facility in Red Deer, Alberta, when there was a huge explosion in a business across the street.

When she heard the blast, Security Guard Bowser immediately ran toward the building to see if she could help. there she met a correctional peace officer working at the location who said he’d called 911. At that moment, she saw a man run out of the building, engulfed in flames.

Several bystanders attempted to put out the fire on the man with no success, until an employee from an adjacent building brought out a blanket, which Bowser confirmed was a fire suppression blanket. She then wrapped the man in the blanket, successfully putting out the fire, and began to treat the man’s injuries as best she could.

A few minutes later, Bowser was relieved by a nurse, so she began crowd control in the area, as directed by the RCMP. The building was, by this time, consumed by flames and she worked tirelessly to keep the public back and away from danger. She also took time to comfort a woman who had witnessed the explosion and was overcome with emotion by what she’d just seen.

Once the fire was under control, the public safety ensured, and bystanders cared for, Bowser returned to her duties at her site across the street.

We’re excited to say that we were able to purchase tickets for Cheryl and her husband to attend the 2025 Alberta Security Exchange (ASX), hosted by ASIS Chapter 162: Calgary/Southern Alberta in Red Deer, at Red Deer Polytechnic on May 14, 2025. The award presentation was held in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 200 security professionals!

Your commitment to your community and to providing immediate assistance is admirable, Security Guard Bowser – thank you!
