Teamwork defused a mental health crisis
One day in November 2024, the security team at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario received numerous calls regarding a person in crisis siting on a ledge on the top floor of the parkade. Security immediately attended to the scene, with Security Officer Jessica Lee arriving first. She quickly scanned the scene and confirmed the incident, reporting the details back to her team. Security Team Lead Jordan Campbell monitored the situation from inside the hospital, communicating with the team and first responders.
When Security Officer Andrew Reardon arrived, he used his de-escalation training to encourage the person to move off the ledge. This tactic was unsuccessful, but Officer Reardon did not give up, continuing to talk to the person until help arrived. Meanwhile, Security Supervisor Denver Richmond began emergency management on the ground to ensure that all bystanders were cleared out of the area, and called 911 for assistance.
Security Officer Justin Blazek arrived on scene shortly afterwards, while Security Officer Reardon and a mental health professional were engaged with the person in crisis. Officer Blazek was able to take advantage of the distraction and secure physical control of the person, pulling them off the ledge and to safety. Through effective non-verbal communication, Security Officers Blazek and Reardon quickly got the situation under control, securing the person until emergency responders arrived and took over.
Everyone on the security team played an integral part on a successful resolution of a difficult situation. Thank you!
