Lifesaving intervention at Calgary airport
While on site at the Calgary International Airport’s West Runway Rehabilitation Project, Access Control Guard Baljeet Chima observed a small crowd gathering close to where he was stationed.
Upon investigation, Officer Chima discovered an individual who had collapsed and was unresponsive. The individual also had visible facial injuries and was bleeding. Assessing the situation, Officer Chima discovered that the individual wasn’t breathing and had no detectable pulse.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, Officer Chima initiated emergency life-saving measures with the assistance of a Pool Construction Ltd. (PCL) representative while they waited for EMS to arrive on scene. They began performing chest compressions and artificial respiration, and administered a defibrillator (AED) three times, in an attempt to restore the individual’s heart rhythm before EMS arrived.
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they confirmed that the individual had experienced a cardiac arrest, and immediately took them to the hospital for further treatment. It was later confirmed that the person successfully underwent a triple bypass surgery, and is, as of the latest update, doing very well and is expected to recover.
The quick and decisive actions of Officer Chima in performing CPR and using the AED were critical in stabilizing the individual and ensuring that they were able to make it to hospital for lifesaving surgery.
Thank you, Officer Chima!
