Exceptional contributions and outstanding performance at Fairview Mall
In May 2024, Fairview Mall Security Dispatch received a call from a female customer who kept yelling “He won’t let her go – he won’t let her go!”
Minutes earlier, a male had a hold of a woman in the front seat of her vehicle and would not let her go; the customer’s attention was caught by the way the male forced his way into the vehicle and an argument ensued. CF Security and CanCom Security responded to two distressed witnesses who were standing in the parking lot outside the vehicle.
When security arrived on scene to assess the situation, it was reported by both witnesses that the male was being abusive to the female inside the vehicle. Security attempted to pull the male out to get him to release his grip on the female, who he was holding by the hips. At this point, security observed a large kitchen knife in the male’s hand, and within seconds the woman was stabbed/slashed 15 times.
Without hesitation, the security team pulled the suspect out of the vehicle, placed him under arrest, and handcuffed him to prevent further injuries. Two other security officers attended to the victim’s wounds immediately, and ensured that she remained in stable condition until fire and EMS arrived on scene.
Security officers worked collaboratively and effectively to ensure the safety of the victim as well as that of the other customers in the surrounding area.
The woman was rushed to a local hospital where she was immediately transferred to an emergency operating room. Security was later advised by Toronto Police that she survived because of the quick thinking and actions of the security team.
The dedication, hard work, training and commitment to saving lives significantly contributed to the ultimate success of this incident, and of the team as a whole. Their ability to respond effectively has not only exceeded our expectations but has also set a commendable standard for their colleagues.
