Prompt response to an overdose

In March 2024, while on patrol early in the morning, Security Guard Mark Malit observed two male subjects, one of whom was lying on the ground, unconscious, in a city park.

Security Guard Malit was unresponsive to verbal calls and physical cues, and the second male subject informed him that the unconscious man had consumed fentanyl. He was observed to have blue lips, pale skin and his eyes were rolled back, while he breathing was short, shallow and spaced. Shift Supervisor Manahan advised Security Guard Malit to contact EMS immediately.

EMS and the dispatcher advised that Narcan should be administered to the unconscious man, who then became slightly responsive. Within a few minutes, Toronto Fire Services arrived and were able to wake up the man to make an assessment, while Malit and Manahan conducted crowd control.

The man refused further medical assistance and was able to leave the scene on foot with his companion.

Thank you for your quick response, Security Guard Malit!
