Remarkable recognition and strategic thinking
In April 2024, Crossing Guard Amy Grozelle started chatting with a man at the corner of Eastern and Carlaw Avenues in Toronto. She’s worked as a crossing guard at this intersection since September 2023.
Crossing Guard Grozelle quickly realized that the man she was talking to was Norman ‘Bill’ Gray, the subjects of a mass notification BOLO that had just been sent out by her company, as well as media coverage she’d seen in the previous couple of days.
Gray had been reported missing from his home in the area of Sheppard Avenue and Torbarrie Road in North York the day before. Crossing Guard Grozelle attempted to reach police by calling 911, but, due to busy call volume levels, she was unable to speak to anyone immediately. However, her friendly and personal demeanor kept Gray engaged in conversation, and ultimately she was able to flag down a police officer in a passing police cruiser, who then took over the situation.
Crossing Guard Grozelle’s keen observation and quick thinking were instrumental in the happy and safe return of Gray to his family, and the family recognized her in a ceremony hosted by Toronto Police 31 Division shortly after the return of their beloved father and husband.
Thank you, Crossing Guard Grozelle!
